My Crochet Christmas Stocking Pattern with a Vintage Theme

My Crochet Christmas Stocking Pattern with a Vintage Theme

When I was a baby I had a stocking knit for me by a family member, the pattern was originally published in January of 1948. I loved this stocking and when my first son was born she made him the same stocking and a different one for my husband and for my other son yet another pattern. Yet the one she had done for me and for my first born was always my favorite. Unfortunately my stocking was lost in a move before I met my husband.
I learned to knit when I was pregnant with my second son in the hopes that one day I would be able to have her patterns passed to me since I was the only one in the family that now knit. My hope was to one day remake my stocking. She has now passed away and at that time noone knew where her patterns were. In the meantime I found knit stocking patterns to try and crocheted a lot of stockings too. (I have crocheted since I was 8)
Right about the time that her pattern was found I also found it online as a free pattern on Ravelry so now I have a printed and digital copy. The only problem is that I am now finding myself making more, and more stockings every Christmas for family and friends and I need to be able to make them in a short amount of time and the knit pattern is made on size 3 very small needles and will take a good amount of time.
The thing is is that I like the look of the vintage stocking and I have not been real fond of many of the crochet stockings I have found, I like the style of the knit stocking so I decided to create my own stocking pattern, one that I could use with any color and chart to make my own stockings. I also decided to make my first chart to mimic the original vintage pattern from 1948 with Santa's face on one side and a Christmas Tree on the other side. This pattern could easily be changed up with different charts and colors.
I enjoy finding free patterns online so my way of paying it forward is to provide all my patterns for free. The only thing that I ask is professional courtesy, please do not take credit for my pattern and if you share it please do not charge for the pattern(but feel free to charge for your work of course). Now on to the pattern...

Starting with the white of the cuff
Row 2-12 sc in each sc across (50 sts)
Row 13-46 work pattern
(For Santa’s eyes, nose and mouth and the lights and branches on the tree when passing them
on the return row if the right side is facing you then work in the back loop and if the wrong
side is facing you work in the front loop. This makes the finished project look nicer but is not
a necessity. Also if you use the Pipsqueak fuzzy yarn make sure and always count those
stitches as they are hard to see and you can easily add or subtract stitches.
Row 47 with red sc in each sc across (50 sts)
Continue to work red til work measures 16 in
Bind off leaving a long tail @30in long
Using a the white stitch around the hat as an outline.
Using Pipsqueak make a small pom-pom and leaving 2 two inch tails from your knot tie the
pom-pom to the base of the hat and weave in the ends.
(if you want to personalize the cuff do that now[I use scraps and a yarn needle to mark off the
top, bottom, quarter and mid points as guidelines, these can be easily pulled out later])

Using a needle and thread sew bells onto the tips of the white triangles at the bottom of the cuff.

Using the tail stitch stocking together(I use a hidden stitch), when you reach the white switch to

      white yarn, weave in ends.

Heal-
Using the seam as the midpoint put stitch markers in both sides of the stocking dividing the
stocking into 2 sets of 25 sts. The markers should be in the middle of your design sides.
Row 1-With the seam facing you starting at the stitch marker to the right attach white and work
25 sc across to other stitch marker. Ch 1 turn
Row 2-sc in next 18 sc, ch 1 turn
Row 3-sc in next 11 sc, ch1 turn
Row 4-sc in next 11 sc, sc in sc from lower row(12 sts) ch 1, turn
Row 5-sc in next 12 sc, sc in sc from lower row(13 sts) ch 1, turn
Row 6-sc in next 13 sc, sc in sc from lower row(14 sts) ch 1, turn
Row 7-17 continue picking up on st from the lower row on each side till all white stitches have
been picked up(25 sts) bind off
Foot-
Row 1-attach red at the midpoint of the heal and work 1 sc in each sc around (50 sts)
Row 2-continue in the round, just past heal work sc2tog, work around til just before heal and do
     a sc2tog, continue around (48 sts)
Row 3-repeat row 2 (46 sts)
Row 4-sc in each sc around (46 sts)
Continue til foot measures 5in, bind off
Toe-
Row 1-attach white in center back and work 1 sc in each sc around
Place a stitch marker on each side above the heel points
Row 2-1 sc in each sc til 2 sts before marker, sc2tog twice, sc in each sc til 2 sts before next
     marker, sc2tog twice (42 sts)
Continue til only 10 sts remain
Bind off leaving @3in tail, sew up toe and weave in ends
Hanger-
Using white ch 14
Sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 2 sc in last sc
Sl st in each ch on opposite side of the sc row, bind off leaving a tail
Fold piece into a loop then using the tail stitch into place on the inside top of stocking against
      seam.

(Added red lines into the cuff on this one)

(Waiting on the baby to be born to put in the last number)

VARIATIONS

(Stripes in the cuff in the same color I do my lettering.)

BABY JESUS STOCKING

(Baby Jesus-Same pattern as the Santa just a different graft and color)

I used-
Caron Simply Soft Party Snow Sparkle(white)
Caron Simply Soft Party Royal Sparkle(blue)
Red Hear Classic Golden Yellow
Scrap Light Pink
Scrap beige or brown

When I was done with this one I added in more hay, and folds in the blanket, You can also add in a face if you want but it also looks good without.

(I put a white stocking on the back of this one because of who it was going to
and included "The Legend of the White Stocking" into it.)
